Nordion CEO Steve West Shares Personal Cancer Story

Cancer has always been a cause close to Steve West’s heart. Not only is he the CEO of Nordion Inc., a world leading provider of medical isotopes for diagnosis and treatment of the disease, Nordion is also the title sponsor of Ride the Rideau—a 100 km bike tour from Ottawa to Merrickville in support of groundbreaking cancer research at The Ottawa Hospital.

In September 2011, just after completing the Ride, Steve was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. Coincidentally, his treatment at The Ottawa Hospital Cancer Centre included participation in a clinical trial, which was the fundraising focus of the Ride for 2011.

Steve credits his busy work and sports training regimen, which included cycling in Ride the Rideau, for getting him through his cancer diagnosis and treatment.

On January 20, 2012, surrounded by his family, Steve rang the ceremonial victory bell in the Chemotherapy Unit of The Ottawa Hospital Cancer Centre.

On September 8, 2012, he will be returning for the third Ride the Rideau event, this time, as captain of his own team, the Nordion Accelerators. While the company goal is $70,000, Steve hopes to raise half of that with a personal goal of $35,000.
