University of Ottawa Heart Institute

The University of Ottawa Heart Institute (UOHI) is Canada's largest and foremost cardiovascular health centre dedicated to understanding, treating, and preventing heart disease.

  • UOHI Telethon. Each year MDS Nordion participates in the annual UOHI Telethon. This major fundraising event enables the Heart Institute to raise much needed funds for prevention, research, equipment and beds, and public education programs, as well as to achieve advances in patient cardiac care. At the 2008 event, MDS Nordion was honored for its contribution of $100,000 toward the over $5.5 million that the telethon raised. MDS Nordion also took part in a segment called "Making the Invisible Visible: Getting New Images of Heart Disease." This segment focused on the application of molecular imaging for cardiac physicians and patients and collaborative partnerships for innovation and success.
  • Molecular Imaging Centre of Excellence. UOHI and MDS Nordion announced their partnership in June 2007 for the establishment of the Molecular Imaging Centre of Excellence to advance cardiology research. MDS Nordion has invested an estimated $2.2 million in the centre, which is equipped with the research and development radiochemistry laboratory that supports cardiology research. Under the guidance of Dr. Terry Ruddy, Chief of Cardiology at the UOHI, this state-of-the-art facility will attract some of the world's brightest researchers to combat heart disease. The centre aims to improve cardiology research by using molecular imaging technology, which looks at the physiology and cellular activity of the body rather than simply the anatomical structure.

The Ottawa Hospital

With its 1,130 beds, The Ottawa Hospital is one of the largest teaching hospitals and leading research facilities in Canada. It provides comprehensive, high-quality, patient-focused health care services, in English and French, to over 1.5 million residents of Eastern Ontario.

  • Gala for Research. MDS Nordion is the proud sponsor of the Gala for Research, an annual black-tie event to recognize and support the outstanding projects being carried out at the Ottawa Health Research Institute (OHRI), the research arm of The Ottawa Hospital. This event attracts more than 500 of Ottawa's business and community leaders.
  • Run for a Reason. For more than 20 years, MDS Nordion has remained committed to actively participating in the Ottawa Race Weekend. Our employees walk, run, volunteer, and fundraise in support of cancer care at The Ottawa Hospital; our employees go above and beyond their regular day-to-day business activities because they value making a tangible difference in their community.
  • The 20/20 Campaign. Over the next five years, more than 100,000 people will come through the doors of The Ottawa Hospital Cancer Centre at the General Campus. MDS Nordion has pledged to support The Ottawa Hospital's 20/20 Campaign - $20 million in 20 months - to complete the expansion of the Cancer Centre to meet this growing need.
