Health, Safety and Environmental Protection

At MDS Nordion we take a leadership role as a responsible corporate citizen and believe in protecting the health and safety of our workers, the community and the natural environment. We adhere to strict regulations and follow stringent environmental, security, and health and safety practices. MDS Nordion operations in Ottawa, Laval and Vancouver meet or exceed the standards set by our Canadian regulator – The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC). In 2005, we received an unprecedented ten-year licence renewal from the CNSC for our processing facilities in Ottawa – a testament to our commitment to protect the environment, community and employees.

MDS Nordion operations are subject to inspection by a number of different organizations, including but not limited to: the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), Health Canada, Transport Canada and Labour Canada.

MDS Nordion is an industry leader in the development and implementation of safe practices to protect workers and the environment. We have comprehensive corporate programs for the management and monitoring of industrial health and safety and environmental protection. These programs ensure that the facilities maintain safe and secure operations, and minimize, to well below accepted regulatory limits, exposures to workers, the public and the environment.

The ALARA (As Low As Reasonably Achievable) principle is actively practiced in the design and operations of all our facilities. MDS Nordion is committed to ensuring that extensively trained personnel are available to monitor and survey the facility to assure a secure and environmentally safe operation.

In addition, MDS Nordion's Ottawa based facility has implemented an Environmental Management System which is certified to ISO 14001:2004 to enable continuous improvement of its environmental performance.
