BC Cancer Foundation

In 2011, Nordion’s Vancouver employees will participate in the Ride to Conquer Cancer® benefiting the BC Cancer Foundation. The ride is a unique, two-day cycling event from Vancouver to Seattle. Money raised will support leading clinicians, scientists and researchers whose search for new discoveries and improved patient outcomes will have a real impact in our communities throughout the province of British Columbia, across Canada, and around the world.

Canadian Blood Services

Nordion holds quarterly on-site blood donor clinics at its Ottawa, Ontario campus.

In 2010, Nordion joined the CBS “Partners for Life” program – a nationwide program for corporate and community organizations to further demonstrate the company’s commitment to saving lives through blood donation.

To date, Nordion employees have donated over 320 units of blood, enough to help 888 people - this number continues to grow.

Canadian Red Cross

To assist the many victims of the catastrophic earthquake in Haiti in 2010, Nordion donated $10,000 to the Canadian Red Cross.

Médecins sans Frontières / Doctors Without Borders (MSF)

In 2010, Nordion announced an exciting new addition to our community relations program - Médecins Sans Frontières / Doctors Without Borders (MSF).

DWB/MSF is an international medical humanitarian organization working in more than 60 countries to assist people whose survival is threatened by violence, neglect or catastrophe.

Similar to Nordion, MSF positively affects the lives of millions of people around the world and their international reach allows for Nordion employees throughout the globe to give back – meaning employees can all make a difference, together.

Through payroll deductions and one-time giving, Nordion employees pledged $14,500 to MSF in 2010/2011.

Ottawa Food Bank

Nordion holds an annual food drive during the holiday season in support of the Ottawa Food Bank.

In 2010, Nordion employees donated two boxes of non-perishable food items to help feed those who are less fortunate in our community.

Sens Foundation

Nordion is proud to be the Family Fun Zone sponsor for the Sens Foundation’s 2011 Walk, Roll & Run in support of Roger’s House.

The Walk, Roll & Run is a non-competitive and pledge driven event for families, friends, neighbours, classmates, organizations and teams of any kind to raise money for Roger’s House – an eight bed home that provides a comprehensive pediatric respite and palliative care program with elements of outreach, residential hospice, pain and symptom management, grief and bereavement counseling, and research.

As part of the Walk, Roll & Run, Nordion is also sponsoring Roger’s Dream Team, which pairs the company with a Roger’s House child and their family to encourage and engage fundraising support.

The Ottawa Hospital

With its 1,130 beds, The Ottawa Hospital is one of the largest teaching hospitals and leading research facilities in Canada. It provides comprehensive, high-quality, patient-focused health care services to over 1.5 million residents of Eastern Ontario.

  • Ride the Rideau - Nordion has been the title sponsor for Ride the Rideau since the inaugural event in 2010. Funds raised through this 100 km road bike tour go towards cancer research at The Ottawa Hospital Research Institute and will help build the new Centre for Innovative Cancer Research and support crucial local research projects that could impact cancer care around the world. The 2011 event raised over $1.8 million for cancer research.

    In January 2012, Nordion CEO Steve West publicly shared his personal cancer story, shortly before ringing the ceremonial victory bell in the Chemotherapy Unit of The Ottawa Hospital Cancer Centre. On September 8, 2012, he will be returning for the third Ride the Rideau event, this time, as captain of his own team, the Nordion Accelerators. While the company goal is $70,000, Steve hopes to raise half of that with a personal goal of $35,000.

  • Gala for Research - Nordion is the proud sponsor of the Gala for Research, an annual black-tie event to recognize and support the outstanding projects being carried out at the Ottawa Health Research Institute (OHRI), the research arm of The Ottawa Hospital. This event attracts more than 500 of Ottawa's business and community leaders.

  • The 20/20 Campaign -  Nordion was a proud supporter of the Ottawa Hospital’s 20/20 - $20 million in 20 months - Campaign, to raise funds for the new Cancer Centre. During an event held February 26, 2010 at the new Centre, the Foundation announced more than $24.5 million had been raised – the largest campaign in its history. The success of this campaign has enabled The Ottawa Hospital to add nine new radiation machines, an additional 15 new chemotherapy chairs, and new patient and family support services to help during recovery.

The University of Ottawa Heart Institute

The University of Ottawa Heart Institute (UOHI) is Canada's largest and foremost cardiovascular health centre dedicated to understanding, treating, and preventing heart disease.

  • UOHI Telethon - Each year Nordion participates in the annual UOHI Telethon. This major fundraising event enables UOHI to raise much needed funds for prevention, research, equipment and beds, and public education programs, as well as to achieve advances in patient cardiac care. Each year, Nordion pledges $100,000 to UOHI and employees volunteer to man the phones during the telethon.

Toy Mountain

To bring cheer to the lives of Ottawa’s less fortunate children during the holidays, Nordion holds an annual Toy Mountain drive.

In 2011, Nordion collected 97 toys.
