In the Community

At Nordion, we don’t just make a living… We make a difference!

As a community partner, Nordion supports a variety of initiatives that reflect our company's core values of trust, respect, integrity, and commitment to excellence.

In 2014, Nordion expanded its community outreach while finding new ways to include employees in the decision making process. The program as a whole, which includes enhanced programs and new ones, provides a rewarding opportunity for both the company and the not-for-profit organizations. These employee-driven programs include:

  • Employee Giving Program: Each quarter, Nordion makes up to three donations to not-for-profit organizations nominated by employees via an application process. If organizations meet standard criteria their names are entered into a draw and winning organizations are notified and receive a donation.
  • Leadership Giving Program: New for 2014, Nordion is now providing each corporate business team with an opportunity to give back in a meaningful way that is aligned with the team’s own giving back interests. The program provides each individual team an opportunity to share their own thoughts and ideas on how to best give back to their community and which organizations they want to give to based on their own values and personal and professional interests. Donations are made to the charities of each team’s choice throughout the year.
  • Volunteer Day Program: As part of our commitment to our communities, for over 10 years Nordion has been providing our employees with one paid day per calendar year to volunteer in the community. This is a great opportunity for employees to involve their entire team and/or family! New for 2014, Nordion is now offering a 7-day volunteer program vs. the original 5-day program. This means that an employee can volunteer any day of the week and receive one paid day in return.

By taking an active role in our communities, we are making a difference in the lives of people and families where we live and work. We want our communities to be stronger, healthier, and happier. We believe that it's our business, our commitment, and our responsibility to make the world a better place for everyone. Here are a few more organizations we support throughout the year:

Canadian Blood Services

Nordion holds quarterly on-site blood donor clinics at its Ottawa, Ontario campus.

In 2010, Nordion joined the CBS “Partners for Life” program – a nationwide program for corporate and community organizations to further demonstrate the company’s commitment to saving lives through blood donation.

To date, Nordion employees have donated over 529 units of blood, enough to help 10 car accident victims and this number continues to grow.

Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario

The Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario is a pediatric health and research center providing family-centered patient care, research, and training for health care professionals.

CHEO is one of only a few stand-alone pediatric hospitals in Canada, and has more than 6,200 admissions, 7,000 surgeries and 170,000 clinic visits each year. It also has one of the busiest pediatric emergency rooms in the country, treating more than 65,000 patients a year.

Nordion and its employees support two very important initiatives as the hospital: Project Stitch and The Healing Garden.

CHEO is preparing to move and reorganize CHEO’s day care surgery and recovery units, build two additional treatment rooms and purchase state-of-the art equipment. This undertaking, fondly called Project Stitch, will dramatically increase patient flow, improve patient privacy, and will have a direct impact on CHEO’s ability to perform more procedures and reduce waiting times.

The Healing Garden provides patients an outlet for rehabilitation and stress management this is both fun and creative. The garden is being used in both physiotherapy and psychiatric practices to promote health and wellness. In addition, it provides Nordion employees an opportunity to volunteer so they too can tend to the overall maintenance of the garden and have a hand in bringing an outdoor space that stimulates all the senses of children.
