Production and sale of Iodine-125, Iodine-131 and Xenon

Kanata, Ontario — July 13, 2016

In response to shifting market conditions and more competitive global business dynamics, Nordion has announced that it will cease production and sale of Iodine-125 and Iodine-131 radiochemicals as well as Xenon effective October 31st , 2016. There will be no impact to our Environmental, Health and Safety programs as a result of this change.

CNSC Independent Environmental Monitoring

Kanata, Ontario — June 29, 2016

Nordion has developed, implemented and maintains an environmental monitoring program to ensure that the public and the environment are protected from emissions related to the facility’s nuclear activities. Between June 28-30 the CNSC is conducting Independent Environmental Monitoring around Nordion’s site. This includes taking air, water and soil samples. The CNSC’s Independent Environmental Monitoring Program has been established to verify that the public and environment around CNSC-regulated nuclear facilities are not adversely affected by releases to the environment. Results of the monitoring will be posted on the CNSC website.

Emergency Response Training Exercise

Kanata, Ontario — June 14, 2016

On June 14, 2016, Nordion evacuated their March Road facility in Kanata as part of an emergency response exercise. The ability to safely evacuate the occupants of any building is very important to mitigate the impact of an emergency. Nordion holds exercises involving practice evacuation on a regular basis as part of its Emergency Management Program to ensure appropriate preparedness for the unlikely event of an emergency at the Nordion site. This exercise has successfully concluded and we thank all those who participated.

Kanata, Ontario — June 14, 2016

Nordion is holding a training exercise this afternoon to test our emergency response plan as part of our efforts to build and maintain a strong emergency management program. This exercise includes the participation of Ottawa Fire Services who have emergency vehicles on site. Joint exercises are important for both Nordion and Ottawa emergency services in order to improve response capabilities and ensure an integrated response in the unlikely event that there is an emergency at the Nordion site.

False Alarm Reported at Nordion Operations in Kanata

Kanata, Ontario — June 3, 2016

On Friday, June 3rd at 3:02 p.m. Nordion evacuated a facility as a result of a fire alarm. The alarm proved to be false. As per Ottawa Fire Services practices, a fire truck was dispatched and was briefly on site to validate the false alarm.

Fire Alarm Reported at Nordion – Heating Plant Building in Kanata

Kanata, Ontario — April 13, 2016

At approximately 11:19 AM this morning, a fire alarm occurred at the Nordion facilities in Kanata, Ontario. Nordion personnel quickly investigated and determined that it was a false alarm. Ottawa Fire Services responded to Nordion, assessed the site of the alarm within the building and issued the all clear at 11:33. This resulted in Nordion personnel safely evacuating the Heating Plant Building in line with company’s standard procedures for dealing with such situations.
