Storm of Friday, September 21, 2018 – No Impact on Nordion

A significant storm passed through the Ottawa area Friday night with tornados touching down in several communities. Nordion personnel were closely monitoring the facility during this time. We are happy to report that the Nordion facility was not impacted by the storm. The Nordion facility remained fully powered, operational, and safe during the storm and throughout the weekend.

Nordion Volunteers plant shrubs along the Nordion side of the creek (Kizell Drain)

On May 28, Nordion volunteers, along with a few members of the Mississippi Conservation Authority, successfully planted several hundred shrubs along the Nordion side of the creek (Kizell Drain) that crosses Nordion’s property. These shrubs will help reduce erosion of the shore banks.

Nordion is selling an unneeded office building and some surplus land

Kanata residents may have noticed a sign at Nordion’s campus advertising the sale of Nordion’s five storey office building and some surplus land along March Road. During the 1960s, Nordion was one of the first technology operations to buy business property in an area which, at the time, was still part of the farmlands of March Township.

Since then, Kanata has grown into a major technology hub with high demand for property along March Road. As part of our ongoing planning processes, Nordion regularly reviews its current and future property and office space needs, and recently concluded that it no longer made sense to retain the five storey office building and surplus lands. Following the sale of the building Nordion will continue to own a sizable campus in the Kanata North business Area including its two storey building which has ample space to accommodate current operations as well as planned and unplanned future growth.

CNSC On-Site May 29th and 30th Conducting Routine Environmental Sampling

The CNSC will be on the Nordion site May 29th and 30th conducting routine environmental sampling as part of their Independent Environmental Monitoring Program (IEMP). To complement existing and ongoing compliance activities, the CNSC implements its Independent Environmental Monitoring Program (IEMP) to verify that the public and environment around CNSC-regulated nuclear facilities are not adversely affected by releases to the environment. The CNSC last conducted independent environmental monitoring at Nordion in 2016.
