Medical Isotopes

Gamma Technologies

We provide reliable, long-term, end-to-end Cobalt-60 supply and services. There are two types of Cobalt which Nordion provides to our customers. The first and most widely used is Cobalt-60 sourced from Canadian nuclear reactors. Every day, around the world, gamma rays from Cobalt-60 are used to reduce or destroy harmful micro-organisms from a wide variety of products—everything from fruits and vegetables to poultry and red meat, from seafood to dog chews, and from cosmetics to surgical gloves. The second type of Cobalt is High Specific Activity (HSA) Cobalt-60 or “medical-grade Cobalt” and is used to treat brain cancer. In addition to Cobalt-60, Nordion also manufactures gamma irradiation systems. There are over 200 large scale irradiation facilities in operation in 45 countries, and Nordion built 120 of them.

2016 Nordion acquired REVISS Services UK Ltd., which operates today as Nordion UK.
2014 Nordion Inc. (now Nordion (Canada) Inc.) was acquired by Sterigenics International LLC. Sterigenics is the world leader in contract sterilization and ionization services for the medical devices, food safety and high performance/specialty materials industries.
2010 MDS Inc. completed a strategic repositioning which saw the Company divest its MDS Analytical Technologies and MDS Pharma Services businesses. The Company officially changed its name to Nordion Inc. on November 1, 2010.
1991 MDS Health Group purchased Nordion from CDIC.
1988 Ownership was transferred from AECL to the Canadian Development Investment Corporation (CDIC). The company assumed a new name, Nordion International Inc.
1952 The federal government created Atomic Energy of Canada Limited (AECL), a Crown corporation. Shortly thereafter, CPD was transferred to AECL, where it rose to international prominence.
1951 Soon after, the radium sales division was given responsibility for selling radioisotopes produced by the newly established nuclear research facility at Chalk River, Ontario. As a result, in 1951, Eldorado established a commercial products division (CPD) to manage the growing isotope business, especially Cobalt-60 used in cancer treatment.
1946 Originally the radium sales department of Eldorado Mining and Refining Ltd., Nordion’s history of innovation started in the late 1940s with the development of one of the first teletherapy units that used the radioisotope Cobalt-60 to destroy cancerous tumours. These types of teletherapy units are still being used today to treat patients.
