False Alarm Reported at Nordion Operations in Kanata

Kanata, Ontario — October 20, 2015

At approximately 10:38 am this morning a false fire alarm from our fire alarm system was reported at the Nordion facilities in Kanata, Ontario, that was caused by a false alarm from a duct smoke detector in an air handling unit in one of the Kanata buildings. This resulted in a brief evacuation of the facility in line with the company’s standard procedures for dealing with such situations. The circumstances of the alarm were quickly assessed and the facility returned to normal operations with only a brief interruption.

August 6 at 11:00pm – Update on Fire at the Nordion Operations Building and return to Production

Kanata, Ontario — On August 6, 2015, Ottawa Fire Services extinguished a fire on a part of the roof above a non-production area of the Operations Building at Nordion’s facility in Kanata.

No employees were injured or required medical attention.

Ottawa Police, Paramedics and Fire Services responded rapidly and, having ensured the situation is safe, left the premises this evening.

Employees will return to regular working hours on August 7 work and production will resume.

Nordion would like to thank the Ottawa Fire, Paramedics and Police Services for their quick response to the situation.

August 6 at 3:00pm – Fire at the Nordion Operations Building

Kanata, Ontario — At approximately 10:15 AM on August 6, 2015, an alarm was triggered and a fire confirmed in the Operations Building at Nordion’s facility in Kanata.

Ottawa Police and Fire Services responded and have now confirmed that the fire has been extinguished, although some firefighters will remain onsite to monitor the situation. Ottawa Fire believes the fire began on a part of the roof of the building above a non-production area. No employees were injured or required medical attention.

Nordion is pleased that the implementation of our Emergency Response Plan (ERP) went smoothly. We are currently assessing any fire and water damage to determine when employees can return to the building.

Nordion would like to thank the Ottawa Fire and Police services for their quick response to the situation. Further updates on the situation will be provided as needed.

August 6 at 12:45pm – Fire at the Nordion Operations Building

Kanata, Ontario — At approximately 10:15 AM on August 6, 2015, an alarm was triggered and a fire confirmed in the Operations Building at Nordion’s facility in Kanata. As a result, Nordion has implemented its Emergency Response Plan (ERP). All employees have been evacuated from the facility and Ottawa Fire, Police and emergency services are on site dealing with the situation. No employees were injured or required medical attention.

The fire is now confirmed to be out and Nordion is working with emergency service responders to ensure the situation is concluded swiftly and safely.

Nordion will provide an update on the situation and next steps as they become clear.

Emergency Responders called to Nordion site on July 29, 2015

Nordion Security called Ottawa police and paramedics on July 29 to respond to a member of the public who had collapsed on Nordion’s property adjacent to March Road. A Nordion Occupational, Health and Safety employee did attend to the individual while awaiting the arrival of emergency services. The patient was then left in the care of police and paramedics to determine next steps.

May 21 and June 18, 2015 – License Renewal 2015

Nordion is applying to re-license its nuclear facility located in Kanata. We placed ads in the Kanata Kourier on May 21 and June 18 to invite community members to put forward letters and/or presentations to convey an opinion or show support towards the re-license and, on June 18, sent a permission-based email to members of the local community.
